"Colors of the Wind" Tutorial

Wow, it’s been quite a while since I’ve posted a tutorial! As requested, this is a tutorial for the “Colors of the Wind” design I made. It looks difficult, but it’s very easy, I promise! I must also note that as the design goes on, you might think, “Wow, this looks so messy and awful.” However, once you put on your glossy top coat, everything gets sealed and smoothed out just fine!

Just know that you may have a bit* of clean-up to do throughout the process and/or by the end of it.

You’re going to need four colors: blue, yellow, pink, and white. I would highly recommend the pink and yellow be neon polishes. Not only will they have better color payoff, but they also work better in terms of consistency. Creme polishes tend to have a higher opacity than neon polishes, and for this look, you DON’T want that from the pink and yellow. You want them to be thin and “runny”.

The key tool you’re going to need for this design is a fan brush. I’ve had viewers e-mail me about this particular brush — either A) they had a hard time finding them, or B) they were a bit pricey. I bought mine off of Amazon.com. Two fan brushes came in a set of 15, and I only paid $4.96 (USD) plus shipping fees (which weren’t much). They’re also great quality for their price! 1. Start with a bright blue base. I’m using China Glaze’s Sunday Funday.

(OPTIONAL) To make sure the fan brush and polish went across the nail a bit more smoothly, I applied one coat of top coat.

2. You’re going to start with painting the white stripes. To achieve this, dip the fan brush in your white polish, but JUST THE MERE TIPS OF THE BRUSH. In combination with using a white polish that’s pretty fluid (I put a little bit of polish thinner in mine), you’ll want to make sure you only use the tips of the brush because it can get really clumped together.

I found the best way to do this was to do a stroke or two (or three, depending personal preference) from left to right, then from right to left. And if you’re a little heavy handed with the white, that’s fine! This is a design that’s not meant to be perfect. Besides, using a little more white than the other colors is good because it’s what’s going to make those neon colors “pop”.

3. Using the same technique, you’re now going to do the pink on top of the white. For this, I used Finger Paints’ Warhol Wannabe. Be sure that the pink is hitting not only the white, creating the hot pink, but also the blue, to make a pretty “neon” purple.

4. Again, in the same fashion, paint the yellow on top. I’m using China Glaze’s Celtic Sun. Be sure that the yellow touches the white (to make the yellow stand out), the pink (to make orange), and the blue (to make green). At the same time, make sure there’s still some blue showing through.

I recommend doing pink before yellow because of color overlap. When you do pink on top of yellow, the orange color that comes out isn’t as great compared to doing it in reverse.

Do your clean-up job, add your top coat and you’re done!

I had this random idea that I think would be really cool. I’m always having dreams of a Nail Art Con or “meet and greet”, but I’ll spare you (again).

I was sitting here and thought of doing some sort of fundraiser! I’m not sure what could be done with it, whether it be selling nail art sets or organizing an event of breaking the Guinness world record of people simultaneously painting their nails, but the proceeds could go to a foundation (or multiple foundations) — for diseases, children, women, anything! I think it would be really cool.

What would be even better is if a bunch of nail artists came together to do this! It’d be an awesome way for those in the Nail Art community to collaborate and develop an even stronger bond with one another. It would be interactive and fun!

Good idea?

You’re welcome! You know, people get a little uptight about the wrinkling and some can overemphasize it. To be honest, unless you can apply that foil PERFECTLY — no missed spots or anything — it’s not going to be a perfect mirror effect. Personally, I think the wrinkled effect can look nice, especially with foils such as Fuchsia Fantasy, Silver Crush, and Tie Dye Surprise (foils with a more randomized or intricate pattern). To me, it comes down to personal preference and trial and error. If you have any more questions about them at all, let me know! I’d be more than happy to help. :)

Hi there! I absolutely adore my foils. Dollar Nail Art has such a great selection with a variety of choices (and it’s inexpensive, yet high quality). I have yet to have a bad experience with the foils. So… Buy them!

As far as wrinkling, it’s going to happen with nail foils in general (I’m not talking about Minx; I don’t consider them foils). The one thing I’ve learned is that the foils will wrinkle a lot less if you use a cheap clear polish. Then you can put your shiny top coat over it. If you use the ‘fancy’ top coats directly on top of it, I’ve noticed that it wrinkles and crackles so much! However, you don’t want any wrinkles at all, there are top coats specifically made for nail foils. I can’t say whether or not they actually work, but you can search the Internet for them.

And you are a life saver. I’ve never heard of Llarowe before, but they have such a huge variety! Thank you!

Since I’ve been on Tumblr, I have witnessed fellow artists’ works being taken by others and not getting the proper credit they deserve. I, for one, have also been in that position, where people have taken my work and were given the credit and praise for the ‘hard work’ of copy and paste and editing watermarks.

A while back I touched on the subject, but this problem is progressively getting worse. Adding even more editors that aren’t doing things correctly is not solving the problem. Tumblr needs to look into the editors and find the ones that are featuring the wrong nail art. By wrong, I mean the ones that are incorrectly attributed. Or make editors out of the ones who know how to properly credit artists and will feature posts that do so (I have no idea if that’s possible, but, hey, it’s a good start).

This is something that has bothered me for so long. I need to save this for a nice, long rant, yes?

For those that send me messages asking, “Why did you abandon us?!” I’m not trying to! Here’s what’s going on:

I have had NO days off since last Sunday. I won’t get another day off until this Saturday.

Let’s throw in the fact that I still go to college.

One of my jobs “lost” my paycheck.

Of course, I go to get a second cup of coffee while my brothers were visiting from out of town and we get rear ended. Thankfully nobody else was hit or injured in any way!

Sorry for being so absent from here, there’s just a lot going on!

I finally got the prize together for the contest, so I should get that going soon!

Hi! I bought them at ShellsNStuff on Etsy(dot)com. They have many bullet and crystal-color varieties; I bought the Winchester 45 Colt with AB Crystal. I just checked to see if that specific pair was still available, and they’re sold out! :( This particular shop does have other crystal color/bullet combos, though!
